R&D Report 1973-02 : The reproduction of negative film by telecine F.A. Griffiths The technique of reproducing negative colour film in a telecine is discussed, and the essential features of the signal processing are described. The suitability of flying-spot and camera-tube telecines for this purpose is also compared, particularly with reference to the achievable signal-to-noise ratios.

R&D Report 1971-13 : Negative fading: Automatic electronic grading R.P. Marsden Abstract This report describes an automatic electronic colour-balance and exposure corrector for use with a telecine channel using negative film. Using the principle that the integral of all colours in a scene approximates to grey, and by maintaining the mean luminance at a suitable constant value, it has enabled acceptable colour television pictures to be derived from film of very variable quality.

R&D Report 1971-29 : 16 mm film: Image steadiness in television presentation. Part 2: Causes of unsteadiness J.R. Sanders The steadiness of pictures derived from film and presented by television is very often unsatisfactory. The causes of this unsteadiness have been determined so that the contributions from each part of the system are known. Suggestions are made as to ways in which the present performance could be improved.

R&D Report 1969-29 : A technical appraisal of colour film in television C.B.B. Wood It may seem obvious that, when two imperfect reproduction media are taken in cascade, the end result will probably be inferior to either of them taken singly. It is certainly true that when colour television has for its input material a reproduction of the original scene by means of a colour motion-picture film, the picture quality reaching the television viewer is inferior to that which reaches him when a colour...

R&D Report 1954-35 : The subjective grey scale related to television transfer characteristics. M. Gilbert A physiological scale of subjective impressions of brightness is measured in terms of physical scales of luminance. It is found that four criteria of brightness are fairly uniformly spaced along the physical scale when luminance is expressed in logarithmic units. The report confirms that it is preferable to plot the transfer characteristic of a television system in logarithmic units rather t...

The cause of this error is discussed and a remedy, involving an alteration to the red colour-analysis characteristic, is described.

R&D Report 1969-28 : Flare in flying-spot cathode ray tubes F.A. Bellis Optical flare in a flying-spot telecine arises mainly in the flying-spot tube. The flare is of two types, one caused by multiple reflections in the tube faceplate, and the other by reflections within the bulb of the tube. The first ('AC') type of flare may be reduced considerably either by incorporating a neutral-density faceplate during manufacture, or by cementing one on to an existing tube...

R&D Report 1978-09 : A digital telecine processing channel. A. Oliphant An experimental digital telecine processing channel is described. It performs the operations of gamma correction, colour masking and aperture correction. The problem of Moire patterns arising from aliasing caused by non-linear processing have been investigated and found to be insignif...

R&D Report 1972-24 : The calculation of electronic masking for use in telecine F.A. Griffiths Electronic masking provides a means whereby some of the defects in the reproduction of a scene by colour motion-picture photography may be compensated electronically when the film is scanned by television. Prior to the use of electronic masking, television film scanners could do no more than attempt to give a reproduction of the scene similar to that produced by optical projections, and the results were...
